Bergenfield now accepts and recycles gable-topped milk, juice, soup, and other beverage cartons, as well as aseptic cartons. Please clean and dry these items, and place them with your bottles, cans, and plastics recycling. Any questions, please call the DPW Office at 201-387-4055 option 3, Mon-Fri 7:00am-3:30pm.

All recycling, garbage, bulk, and vegetative waste must be placed curbside after 6:00pm on the night before or before 6:00am on the day of scheduled pick-up, regardless of the weather.

ONLY these recyclable materials may be brought to the Recycling Center by residents: paper, newspaper, cardboard, bottles, cans, plastics (with #s 1, 2 & 5 ONLY), car batteries, rechargeable batteries (NO non-rechargeable batteries); ONLY these electronics and e-waste may be brought to the Recycling Center by residents: TVs, computer monitors, computer towers/computer CPUs, laptops, DESKTOP printers, DESKTOP fax machines. Vegetative waste, garbage, bulk items, and all other items not listed above are prohibited at the Recycling Center drop off.

There is bulk pickup only 4 times a year (Jan, Apr, Jul, Oct). Residents are also eligible for a one-time bulk pickup when they sell their house (Certificate of Occupancy ((CO)) from Building Department required from selling resident, call DPW Office to schedule one-time bulk pickup after Certificate of Occupancy ((CO)) issued.)

There is no recycling pickup in your quadrant on a Holiday.
We do not pickup contractor debris, concrete or bricks.

The department also takes care of:

  • Sewer Blocks
  • Street Signs
  • Borough Parks
  • Borough Owned Trees

Pothole repair, sewer blocks, or problems with park trees or equipment call the DPW during business hours.

For sewer emergencies after hours or on weekends contact the Police Department at 201-387-4000.

For trimming or removal of Borough trees (planted in Borough right of ways - if you are unsure whether it is a Borough tree or not, call the DPW Office at 201-387-4055 option 3), write a letter to the Shade Tree Committee at 198 North Washington Avenue or e-mail Hilda Tavitian, Shade Tree Clerk, at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.. Your e-mail will be forwarded to the Shade Tree Committee. For emergencies due to storm damage, call the DPW during business hours or the Police Department after hours.

It is not permitted to blow, shovel, or plow snow or ice into the street (see Borough Code Ch. 273 Article III). It is not permitted to park on Borough roads during snow emergencies (see Borough Code Ch. 299 Section 12).

Leaf collection at curbside begins mid-October to early December; check garbage/recycling pickup schedule calendar for exact dates each year. During this period please place your leaves at the curb. After the last date in December, hold leaves until next vegetative waste collection season begins. In the event it is a late season, bag leaves in biodegradable bags (NO plastic bags) and call the DPW Office at 201-387-4055 option 3, as the DPW will make arrangements to pick up your leaves. Depending on the weather, sometimes leaf collection at curbside will be extended; contact the DPW Office at 201-387-4055 option 3 or check Borough website for updates. The DPW has no control over the weather, leaves must be picked up before it snows. Thank you for your assistance.
